The professorship Analysis and Monitoring of urban areas studies theories and empirical analysis of the causes, forms and impacts of urbanization processes. It is based within the methodological research areas of the geoinformation sciences and finds applications in urban and human geography, planning, economy and social sciences.
This position also heads the resarch area "Geoinformation and Monitoring" at the Research Institute for Regional and Urban Development, ILS, in Dortmund. The ILS is a non-profit institute with a focus on interdisciplanary research in the spatial planning sciences. In addition to the Geoinformation and Monitoring section it has four research groups working on:
- Urban research
- Built environment
- Daily Mobility and Transportation Systems
- The City as Social Space
The cooperation between RWTH Aachen University and ILS strengthens the knowledge transfer between university and other research institutions in the named disciplines. On this basis, the course programme, bachelor and master theses, internships and joint research initiatives can be better integrated between the university requirements and the focused reasearch at ILS. It provides a plattform of knowledge transfer and scientific exchange that students and aspiring researchers can benefit from for their future careers.
The main research objective is to advance methods of spatial analysis in urban monitoring and analysis using geodata, geostatistics, and urban remote sensing. Quantitative methods are complemented and extended towards real-world applications in land use modelling, descriptive and inductive statistics for the analysis of distribution patterns and their changes in computer-based scenarios of spatial development, and their interaction with methods of empirical social research.
Based on expertise in these methods, the research area has an important interdisciplinary role: on the one hand, it provides a technical plattform for testing and integrating new analysis potentials in an increasingly connected and accessible geodata infrastructure for urban research. On the other, it provides initiatives and ideas to develop practical tools for new business segments in spatial planning, including participation techniques based on user-generated information, new forms of visualization and communication for spatial analysis, e.g. interactive WebGIS.
